Thionville, town of the belfry and the Moselle
The département’s second-largest town, Thionville keeps from its fortified past the fine Tour aux Puces, which now houses a museum. The centre, between market square and belfry, hosts a lively market on Tuesday mornings and a summer season of riverside guinguettes. The pedestrianised quays of the Moselle lend themselves to an end-of-day stroll, when the light settles over the barges.
Sarreguemines and the faience
To the east, Sarreguemines owes its fame to its faience factories, including the Museum of Faience Techniques and the famous Jardin d’hiver of the Casino des Faïenceries, fully covered with polychrome ceramic that marvels visitors with its originality. Right next door, the river Saar invites a cross-border walk towards Germany. A Franco-German lunch, a detour via ceramic workshops and the day takes on a very distinctive colour.
Amnéville, Forbach and thermal getaways
Amnéville-les-Thermes brings together a renowned zoo, aquarium, thermal baths and indoor ski slope in a very Mosellan leisure park. In Forbach, the Schlossberg and its medieval tower offer a panorama all the way to the Saar. Border cafés blend French and German accents. On Lyad, Mosellan singles share their favourite outings; it is up to you to find someone to grab a ticket for the next show at the Galaxie.
